Why It’s Important to Learn the Right Way to Fall
For dancers, practice makes perfect. However, practice is not perfect. Many times, the practices include teacher corrections, mistakes, and falling. Falling is one of the most important things a dancer can learn because every dancer will fall. How a dancer falls is key.
Learn From Your Mistakes
Dancing can teach you a lot of things that are essential to life. According to Unwritten, it is shown that dancing improves student’s lives in a multitude of ways. One of the biggest lessons that dancing teaches is how to learn from your mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s inevitable. The growth comes from what you learn after the mistake. A fall can be a misstep, a second guess, or a loss of balance. What it is not is a sign that you are a bad dancer. It means that once you get back up and try again, you are becoming a better dancer than you were before the fall.
Like everything else, there is a right way and a wrong way to fall. The wrong way could have you landing on a more frail part of your body. As Dolman Law explains, falling can result in serious injuries, including head injuries that are made more severe if the force is great enough to cause the brain to collide with the inside of the skull. However, falling the right way will have you protecting your head, falling on your side, and falling into the fall. That way, you have less chance of breaking a bone, spraining a joint, or obtaining a serious head or brain injury. With the right fall, you are able to protect yourself to dance another day.
Being an Example
Just like you have dancers that you look up to, whether it’s a teacher, a celebrity, or an older student that you admire, someone is watching you. Even when you fall, they are looking to you to see what you do now. They have fallen in the same places that you have and when you show them how to fall and how to get back up, they believe that they can do it too. In the words of Ivy Exec, whether you know it or not, you are an example for someone. You have to be able to fall and get back up so they can see they can do the same.
Dancing is a beautiful form of expression, and even though falling isn’t glamorous, it’s part of the art, so you need to know how to do it correctly. If falling leads to an injury, that could damage your abilities for dancing. Additionally, learning to overcome failure is an important lesson that everyone can benefit from, inside and outside of the dance studio.
