What Dancers Need to Be Doing During Off-Season

How you take advantage of your off-season plays a key role in how successful you will be when you return to the dance floor. Using this recovery time strategically will help you to make the most out of your rest and prepare your body for the next competition season. Here are a few things that dancers can do during the off-season.

Take Time to Heal

Especially if you are prone to injury, the off-season is necessary to allow your body to heal, according to Dance Informa. Do not squander this time simply sitting around and hoping to get better. Instead, you should be proactive about giving your body the things that it needs to repair itself. This healing can come through many avenues including chiropractic care, icing and physical therapy. Once you feel as if your body is back at peak condition, you can begin going through exercises that will make it stronger for the upcoming season.

Stay Active

The off-season is an ideal time to incorporate cross-training exercises into your daily activity. This is a great opportunity to experience an exercise that you have always wanted to try. Activities that focus on strength and flexibility are especially good at building muscle and increasing your range of motion. Good choices for this include yoga and pilates. According to Jacoby & Meyers, keeping up with your physical endurance during the off-season will keep you in shape and prevent injury when you begin competing again. If you incur an injury from an incident in which someone else is at fault, be sure to consult the services of a lawyer.

Nourish Your Body

In addition to healing and staying active, according to Beet Boost, you also need to be intentional about nourishing your body with the right foods. While it may be tempting to use the off-season as your excuse to indulge in an unhealthy diet, you will come to regret this when it is time to return to competition. Take care to focus on foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. Keeping your body hydrated will also boost your overall health. You will return to the dance floor stronger than ever if you do not let your diet fall by the wayside.

Make every day of your dancing off-season count by engaging in purposeful behaviors that set you up for success when you return to action. You will not regret taking the time to care for your body in preparation for what lies ahead.
